Age-Specific Reference Ranges for Prostate-Specific Antigen as a Marker for Prostate Cancer
نویسندگان
چکیده
More than a decade ago, several investigators found serum PSA levels in cancer-free men to correlate directly with age and prostatic volume. This provided the basis for the establishment of age-specific reference ranges for PSA constituting an attempt to improve sensitivity and specificity of serum PSA as a marker for prostate cancer. Differing age-specific reference ranges for PSA were established in whites, African Americans, Asians, and Orientals. Moreover, since the introduction of different molecular forms of PSA with the inherent capability to differentiate between benign and malignant disease, age-specific reference ranges for free and complexed PSA have also been established. Subsequent studies sought to evaluate whether the standard 4.0 ng/ml cutoff should be replaced by age-adjusted cutoffs. Multiple trials involving various test modalities yielded inconclusive results. More recently, attempts were made to integrate principles of PSA density and PSA velocity into concepts of age-adjusted cutoffs for PSA envisioning more sensitive and specific PSA driven screening regimens. Hypothetical approaches involving age in association with prostatic growth or longitudinal data of PSA changes in individual men await further evaluation in prospective clinical trials. In conclusion, the usefulness of age-specific PSA ranges remains controversial because of concerns that the use of age-adjusted cutoffs for counselling men to undergo prostate biopsy runs the risk of missing a high proportion of clinically significant cancers in older men and augments the rate of unnecessary biopsies in younger men. # 2006 European Association of Urology and European Board of Urology. Age Specific Reference Levels of Serum Prostate-Specific Antigen, Prostate Volume and Prostate Specific Antigen Density in Healthy Iranian Men
Background: It is relevant to highlight that there is not a precise and perfect report on either 95 percentile value (upper limit of normal range) or on appropriate reference intervals for serum PSA in Iranian population. Objective: To determine age-specific reference ranges for serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) concentration and PSA density (PSAD) and prostate volumes in a population of he...

Background: Prostate cancer is the third most common malignancy in men worldwide. Despite being a helpful biomarker in prostate cancer, prostate specific antigen (PSA) is affected by different factors including age, lifestyle, geographical region and ethnicity. Objective: To determine the age specific serum PSA level among healthy Northern Iranian men and to compare the results of our study wit...

Background: Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA), also known as gamma-seminoprotein or kallikrein-3 (KLK3), is the best marker for early diagnosis of prostate cancer. Since age and race are affecting PSA levels, determining age-specific reference ranges of PSA in every community is necessary for increasing the efficiency rate of PSA. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the normal distributi...

Introduction: Prostatic adenocarcinoma is one the most common malignances and the second cause of death in males due to cancer. Prostate Specific Antigen (PZSA) serum level is the first marker to screen such patients. We aimed in this study, to assess the intensity of prostatic adenocarcinoma tissue staining with PSA staining method. Methods: In this corss-sectional study, prostatic adenocarcin...

Introduction: Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is one of the most sensitive markers for diagnosis of prostate cancer. Immunoradiometric kit (IRMA) is a common and sensitive method for determination of PSA in clinical laboratories. This kit has four major components: solid phase coated with monocolonal antibody, pair antibody labelled with I-125, series of standards i...

Background: Recently, modification of T cells with chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) has been an attractive approach for adoptive immunotherapy of cancers. Typically, CARs contain a single-chain variable domain fragment (scFv). Most often, scfvs are derived from a monoclonal antibody of murine origin and may be a trigger for host immune system that leads to the T-cell clearance. Nanobody is a spe...
